Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: My Experience Preparing for a Gym Photoshoot

Taking part in a gym photoshoot was never on my bucket list, but it became a goal that pushed me to improve my fitness and nutrition. It’s interesting how a spontaneous idea can set you on a path of transformation, both physically and mentally. When I set the date for the photoshoot, it created a clear deadline. This was just what I needed to kick my fitness journey into high gear.

I'm excited to share my story with you, including the valuable lessons I learned along the way. So buckle up as I take you through my experiences—everything from setting up my nutrition plan to crushing my workouts!

Setting the Stage: The Decision

My decision to participate in a gym photoshoot came from working with my coach Rebecca Asprey. She had been helping me with Paris Hyrox training last year and mentioned that she had organised a group photoshoot with some of her clients as a way to bookmark their goals. When those photos dropped, I was in awe. They all looked incredible and confident and when I mentioned this to Rebecca she was quick to book me in for my own 4 months later.

I knew that taking part in a gym photoshoot wasn’t just about minor improvements; it required dedication and focus. It was time to step outside my comfort zone.

Nutrition and Fitness

No one could ever say that prior to this I didn't exercise. The main problem with my routine was the nutrition. I was clueless to say the least and this is exactly where Rebecca was worth her weight in gold. She has a degree in nutrition and is very passionate about ensuring women fuel (and re-fuel) properly in their workouts and rest days, rather than starving themselves.

Surprisingly, I never felt hungry! Rebecca calculated my calories to ensure that I felt full and fueled for all my exercise endeavours. As you may know, I've got some big running goals this year with 3 ultra marathons booked so I can't be undereating, it's not happening but I needed to learn basic nutrition.

My previous issue was that I under ate generally, and then due to the running and gym work, I snacked more to keep me going which meant that I was almost running on zero and if you've been binging on Dr Stacy Sims like me, then you'll know that not eating post work out is a huge no-no. Fasting just doesn't really work for us ladies!

The Fitness Journey: Grit and Growth

With my nutrition and workout plan in place, consistency became my priority. Rebecca created a plan that saw me in the gym 3 times per week, and with my running schedule around 4-5 days per week I used my apple calendar like a personal assistant. This helped me massively because when you're a busy person, if you don't plan you will absolutely fail.

Tracking my workouts and taking progress photos turned out to be great motivational tools too and the photos and measurements were done every 4 weeks. Each image was a reminder of my progress—even on days I felt I was struggling. For example, I compared my initial photos, where I felt self-conscious, to my later ones, where I could visibly see the changes in my body.

Overcoming Obstacles: Mindset Matters

Of course, the journey was not without its challenges. There were plateaus in my strength gains and moments of self-doubt. I often questioned whether I would look good enough in front of the camera. But I reminded myself that the goal of the photoshoot wasn’t about winning a beauty contest; it was about celebrating my hard work and personal growth.

The support I got online, through my coaching group and from friends was incredible especially on those tough days. Lets face it, periods, poor sleep and just a general tough day can be enough to push you off course, but some of the tools I learned was really about one day not affecting your entire progress.

Countdown to Photoshoot Day: Final Prep

As the photoshoot day approached, I was excited and anxious. I mean, I've never done this before - who knows what to expect! I got myself a spray tan (got to have those muscles showing up) and the week before was pretty strict in terms of sticking to calories and taking my intensity in the gym down a little.

Rebecca's instructions was plenty of sleep, plenty of water until the day before and a carby meal the night before the shoot - I went for a burger and chips and it was delightful!

The Day of the Shoot: Embrace the Moment

Finally, the day arrived. I got the train to Aberdeen, met up with the make up artist and got my hair all styled. I felt incredible and the messages I got from my husband, daughters and friends was so lovely - I think everyone was pretty excited for me. And as you can see below, I was pretty pleased with myself.

The photoshoot itself was good fun, and I did get into it. The photographer Jonathan was fantastic, talking me throught it, suggesting poses and being super complimentary. It was the most friendliest and fun experience ever!

Reflecting on the Experience: A New Chapter

Looking back on my experience preparing for the gym photoshoot, I realise it was about more than just taking pictures. It turned into a fantastic opportunity for self-improvement in both fitness and nutrition. I truly stepped out of my comfort zone, embraced challenges, and discovered new strengths within myself.

Now, as I continue my fitness journey, I encourage anyone thinking about a similar challenge to go for it! It’s not just about the photoshoot day; it’s about all the moments leading up to it—every workout, every meal, and every bit of self-discovery counts.

Here's to more adventures in fitness and nutrition ahead! And to the next photoshoot in June!

This journey has inspired me in so many ways, and I am eager to see where the next challenge takes me. So, what are you waiting for? Step out of your comfort zone and dive into self-discovery—you too might be surprised by what you find!
